Understanding EFT Tapping: A Path to Calm the Nervous System

In our fast-paced world, many of us experience anxiety and stress, leading to an overactive nervous system. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly known as tapping, offers a unique approach to soothe the mind and body.

What is EFT Tapping?

EFT tapping is a holistic therapy that combines elements of cognitive therapy with acupressure. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a particular issue or emotion. The technique aims to release emotional blockages and promote a sense of balance and well-being.

How does EFT Tapping Work???

  1. Understanding the Nervous System: The nervous system regulates our body’s responses to stress. When faced with anxiety or trauma, the sympathetic nervous system activates the “fight or flight” response, leading to increased heart rate, shallow breathing, and heightened alertness. EFT tapping helps shift the body from this state of heightened arousal to a more relaxed state, engaging the parasympathetic nervous system.

  2. Tapping Points: EFT tapping focuses on specific acupressure points, primarily on the face and upper body. Common points include:

***Karate chop point (side of the hand)

***Top of the head

***Eyebrow point

***Side of the eye

***Under the eye

***Under the nose

***Chin

***Collarbone

***Under the arm

***Under the chest

***Wrist point

Tapping these points while verbalizing thoughts or feelings sends calming signals to the brain.

  1. The Process:

  1. Identify the issue: Focus on a specific problem or emotion causing distress.

  2. Rate the intensity: Use a scale from 0-10 to gauge your current emotional intensity.

  3. Create a setup statement: Formulate a statement that acknowledges the issue while expressing self-acceptance (e.g., “Even though I feel anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  4. Tap on the points: Tap each point while repeating the setup statement and focusing on the issue at hand.

  5. Reassess the level of intensity: After each round of tapping, reassess your emotional intensity to notice any shifts.
