What is EFT Tapping? A Beginner’s Guide to Emotional Freedom Technique

In the fast-paced world that we live in, with stress and emotional challenges, many individuals are seeking effective tools for self-care and emotional healing. One effective tool gaining popularity is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly know as tapping. This beginner’s guide will explore what EFT tapping is, how it works, and how you can incorporate it into your daily routine.

What is EFT Tapping?

EFT tapping is a holistic healing technique that combines elements of cognitive therapy and acupressure. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on distressing emotions or thoughts.  The practice is based on the premise that unresolved emotional issues can lead to physical and psychological symptoms. By tapping on these points, you can release negative energy and restore emotional balance while bringing the nervous system to a state of calm.

How does EFT Tapping work?

1. Start by identifying the issue: Begin by pinpointing the specific issue or emotion you want to address, such as anxiety, stress or trauma.

2. Rate the intensity: Before you begin tapping, rate the intensity of your emotional distress on a scale from 0-10, with 10 being the most intense. We call this the SUDS scale (Subjective Units of Distress Scale). This allows us to track progress.

3. Tapping Sequence: Use your fingertips to tap on specific meridian points while repeating a statement out loud that acknowledges the issue at hand. The typical sequence includes:

  • Karate Chop Point-Side of the hand

  • Top of the Head-Center of the top of the head

  • Eyebrow Point-Inner edge of the eyebrow point

  • Side of the Eye-On the bone under the eye

  • Under the Nose-Between the nose and upper lip

  • Chin Point-Middle of the chin

  • Collarbone Point-On the Collarbone under the neckline

  • Under the Arms-Under the armpits

  • Under the Chest-Under the breastbone

  • Wrist Point-Tap both wrists together

4. Affirmation Statement: While tapping, repeat a phrase that acknowledges the issue and affirms self-acceptance. For Example, “Even though, I feel anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

5. Re-evaluate Intensity: After each round of tapping you do a check in and rate the level of intensity again. You may notice a decrease in your rating as your energy shifts.

Benefits of EFT Tapping:

  • Reduces anxiety and stress levels: Many individuals report a significant anxiety reduction and overwhelm after practicing just one session of EFT tapping.

  • Enhances emotional well-being: Tapping can release negative emotions, leading to improved mental clarity and emotional resilience.

  • Supports physical health: Studies suggest the EFT tapping may help alleviate physical symptoms related to stress such as headaches, or digestive issues.

My Story, My Truth

Three years ago, I never imagined I’d break free from anxiety and guilt after my 18 year marriage ended, but one decision changed everything.

For months I was overwhelmed, defeated and spiralling into sadness. My mind raced with what ifs and I couldn’t sleep, my body felt heavy and the guilt of my failed marriage weighed on me day and night. I didn’t realize that my old ways of coping, bottling things up, overthinking and catastrophizing were making everything worse, the more I tried to push through, the deeper I sank.

I accepted I needed a new way forward. I opened up to a friend who introduced me to a holistic system she trusted called EFT-Tapping.

I committed, even though I thought it wouldn’t work. I practiced the tools daily, especially when stress hit. I learned to process my emotions in real time instead of letting them pile up.

Before I tried to heal on my own, but nothing shift will power alone wasn’t enough, but what I really needed were proven practical tools.

And now…

Now I sleep through the night, release tension in my body and handle stress with hope and confidence.

These tools have helped me heal and show up as my best self no matter what life throws at me.

In conclusion, EFT tapping offers an empowering and accessible way to address emotional challenges and promote overall health and well-being. Whether you’re suffering from trauma, PTSD, chronic health/disease, stress, anxiety, depression, incorporating this technique into your self-care routine can lead to profound changes in your emotional health. Take the first step towards emotional freedom today by exploring EFT tapping.
